Let’s be honest—Gatorade had a moment. But when it comes to our kids… I think it’s time to say goodbye to the popular neon-colored beverage.
Most store-bought sports drinks are packed with artificial dyes, excessive sugar, and ingredients that don’t belong in kid’s growing bodies. And while these drinks seem essential for hydration, especially in the summer, the truth is: there are far better options.
So instead of reaching for Gatorade when your kid is at soccer practice, running around at summer camp, or just melting in the Florida heat at the playground, reach for hydration that actually nourishes them!
💧 1. Coconut Water (with a twist)
Naturally hydrating, full of electrolytes like potassium and magnesium, and way less sugar than your average sports drink. I like to mix coconut water with a splash of fresh juice (like orange or pineapple) for a toddler-friendly, budget-friendly option.
HealthyMom tip: freeze it into popsicle molds for a cool-down treat that also hydrates! My 2-year-old loves a healthy popsicle!
🍋 2. DIY Electrolyte Lemonade
This homemade lemonade is fun and easy to whip up at home. (*bonus points if you’re using it for a lemonade stand!)
What ya need:
Water
Fresh lemon juice
Pinch of sea salt
A drizzle of maple syrup
Shake all of the ingredients in a mason jar.
🧊 3. Water + Fruit + Salt = The Perfect Hydration Elixir
My HealthyGirl besties know how much I love an infused spa water.
For this hydrating version: throw some cucumber slices, berries, or watermelon chunks in a water bottle with a tiny pinch of mineral salt. Add ice cubes or let the drink sit in the fridge for an hour.
🥭 4. Fruit Slushies
This is for when your kids don’t want to drink, but they want to snack. I like to blend frozen fruit, ice cubes, a splash of coconut water, water, or almond milk, and a pinch of salt into a thick slushie. Honestly — this is perfect for kids AND mom!

But what about the sports games and outings?
Gatorade is everywhere at kids' games and events. If you’re the snack parent, try bringing individual coconut water boxes (Costco sells a big pack of them for a great price!) or small mason jars of homemade lemonade. We are all about progress over perfection here. That being said, you might just inspire another HealthyMom!
Hydration doesn’t have to come in the form of Gatorade. Our kids deserve real hydration and fuel. Let’s keep it simple, nourishing, and natural this summer 💛
